Chapter 3

I winced as my Dodge Dart’s front right tire hit a pothole. Slowing to a crawl, I carefully maneuvered several additional holes. Although I managed to avoid the worst of them, there were so many gouges in the dirt road, missing them all would be impossible.

Bank Street ran along the Three Forks River and was the only road in and out of Cyprus Grove, a low-rent mobile home community.

Actually, the road wasn’t the only way into Cyprus Grove. If you had an ATV, it was possible to get in through the woods or use the river.

The overcast sky added a layer of surrealism to the nightmarish scene. Most of the mobile homes lining the riverbank were in disrepair, but that was to be expected. Cyprus Grove was a community made up of mostly low-income families; those that either couldn’t afford to keep up the maintenance on their homes or was renting from a slumlord that refused to.

The Bish house wasn’t difficult to find. It was the tan and white mobile home with all the police vehicles around it. Reporters huddled just beyond the yellow crime scene tape, hoping to pick up new information as soon as it was available.

The reporters weren’t a big surprise. I’d actually expected more. This was the biggest news in Bayou Landing since Karl and Alicia Reid’s disappearance.

There was that mess when Coleman Zeke shot and killed his girlfriend, but that wasn’t really a mystery. The police caught the perp red-handed, literally. When emergency response arrived, Cole was still standing over the victim’s body, the smoking gun in his hand.

This was different.

I wasn’t as convinced as Liv, but I did think that there was a possibility that the Bish abduction could be connected to the child abductions from twenty years ago.

In Karl and Alicia’s case, they’d just disappeared into thin air.

A white tent had been erected in the neighbor’s yard as a temporary headquarters for the police and search teams. It was close to the Bish trailer, but not close enough to interfere with CSI.

Just as I killed the engine, I saw Colin emerge from the tent. He was headed toward a black SUV.

Now was the time to intercept him.

Scrambling from my car, I rushed to catch up with him. “Agent Reid! Can I have a word with you?”

“I already told you people … we have nothing new yet,” he barked, twisting his head around just enough to glance at me over his shoulder.

Stopping in mid-stride, he spun around.

The move was so unexpected that I nearly ran into him. “I’m not a reporter.”

Colin lifted his dark sunglasses to that he could get a better look. “So you’re not. It’s Kara Savoy, right?”

The disinterested tone in his voice caught me by surprise. I’d imagined anger or maybe even disdain, but complete indifference hadn’t even been on my radar.

“That’s me.” I forced a smile.

“What can I do for you, Kara?”

“I was wondering if I could talk to you about the missing …”

“It’s doubtful this has any connection to your brother’s case,” he said, cutting me off.
